Hill’s buildings

DISCOVER

The Mill Group’s most ambitious project is the 420,000-square-foot Mill campus at 300 W. Highway Street. The former Lee Paper Company once was a meaningful part of daily life in Vicksburg, employing generations of Vicksburg families—its whistle reportedly heard from over fifteen miles away. When the facility closed and demolition became a real possibility, Chris Moore stepped in.

Since 2014, Chris and The Mill Group have stabilized the campus, completed complex remediation, and helped get the campus listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From the beginning, the work has been painstaking and deliberate with an intention for the building to stand as a new economic force for good in the community for another 200 years. Planning for the first public phase of the campus is now underway.

In 2016, The Mill Group began acquiring commercial buildings in downtown Vicksburg during a period of significant decline. Vacancy and neglect had become the norm, with historic structures facing the very real threat of being lost. Most of the buildings we purchased had sat vacant until we began our work to bring each one back. From restored storefronts that are now home to active businesses, to the Hill’s Buildings that serve as event venues and the Cone Top Brewery Museum, to our next planned restoration on Main Street, the work downtown reflects the same philosophy that drives everything we do: these places matter, and they are worth saving. We will continue this work across our portfolio with the same level of intentionality and care you see downtown today.

If you own a home or business in the Historic District, you may have access to the same preservation incentives we’ve used in our own restorations. Reach out to to the Village of Vicksburg or the State Historic Preservation Office to learn more.
