The Village of Vicksburg Historic District

“I strongly believe that small towns are going to rebound and be highly desired places to live and socialize in the future. A strong factor in bringing businesses and people back to main street will be the charm and aesthetic appeal that historic buildings in small towns have to offer.”

— Chris Moore, The Mill at Vicksburg

In April 2022, the same year the Village of Vicksburg celebrated its 150th anniversary, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Vicksburg Historic District. The designation covers 176 commercial, residential, and community properties, some dating back to the late 1860s.

The designation reflects what anyone walking these blocks can feel—downtown Vicksburg is not just old; it is genuinely historic. The buildings that line Main and Prairie Streets carry the memory of a community that grew up around a waterfall, a mill, and the people who worked there. Their brickwork, proportions, and storefronts are not merely decorative—they are evidence of a living history.

The Village of Vicksburg led the effort to secure the Historic District designation, with strong support from The Mill Group. Working alongside property owners, historians, and community partners, the community brought the nomination to life. The Mill Group also invested in restoring multiple downtown properties, demonstrating that, building by building, these structures are worth preserving. Together, the designation now provides additional tools and incentives to ensure that the work continues and that the character of downtown Vicksburg is protected for generations to come.
